Joseph Guardo is
the creator and sculptor of the Evangelical walk, consisting of eight
groups, and the large statue of the Sacred Heart. The statue of the Sacred Heart, which sits at the top of the hill and greets
visitors as they arrive, was executed in fibreglass. The
eight groups of the Walk are in artificial stone.
This Sanctuary has a long history. The collaboration between the Fathers
of the Assumption and Joseph Guardo lasted from 1958 to 1969. There were
plans for more groups but funds ran out. The anti-clergy, anti-religion
revolution was gaining momentum. It was feared the Sanctuary would close
down. Fortunately the Maristes Fathers bought the Sanctuary and it has
seen, since then, a new renaissance.
